8 Months Inside New York’s Migrant Shelters: Fear, Joy and Hope

September 11, 2024-Ivan, Antipkina, 3, gazes out of the window of his family’s room at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan where he lives with his parents and teenage sister. The family is among more than 3,300 Russians who have passed through the city’s shelter system. They are determined to lay down roots in the city and possibly find a place in Harlem, but have been unable to save enough money for rent because of the high costs of child care.
